Taken is usually (USUALLY) done by the players of vmk that have been banned once or multiple times, and is a very bad environment. When someone asks if i'm taken, i simply say please do not ask me again, because i know that they just want my stuff. Taken has caused so much trouble in the past with vmk, a lot of times having to do with this... people get "Jelous" and start fights, causing a lot of chaos. Honestly, if they get rid of the word, it won't get rid of the problem. As long as people can say boy or girl and friend, you can still ask people to be your boy or girl friend. They would have to get rid of those words as well and that would just be ridiculous.
In my opinion, even though people do it, it is wrong and most of us feel the same. There is no place for this in a game that is designed for children. I don't think we need to keep discussing it. But that is just my opinion and I mean no disrespect to anyone.
