Title: Project 1: Toontown DLR and WDW

Jessiestudio - March 22, 2009 05:25 PM (GMT)
Ok guys and gals our first project is this. I see that most seemed to want to focus on WDW‘s Toontown while others wanted to focus on DLR’s, and others were really up for either. So how about this we are going to get into two groups, one team for Disneyland Toontaskers and one team for Magic Kingdom Toontaskers. We are going to try to develop two Toontowns that are both similar and different. But before we can divide into teams we need to make a list of things we are going to want to see in both. Now where each team takes this list, and what they do with it, is up to them but you guys will have one month after the list is finalized to create your new Toontowns. I will suggest ideas for both teams to use on the main task page but I will not be on either team. So let’s get a list of things we need to see in this toontown and then I will start on the teams, so make sure to post if you have a WDW or DLR preference.

Current Possible List:

Make at least 4 inanimate Objects into AA throughout the new land. It can be anything from a dresser to a lamp post but make it fun and toony!

2 Toon Themed Dark Ride attractions

A place to great Disney Characters, will it be in their house or more like the judges tent?

1 restaurant, buffet or table service and or 2 quick serve restaurants.

Some sort of living space of every member of the Fabulous Five, country cottage, normal home, or whatever, its up to you.

1 Wennie to act as a draw into the land

*Visual Aids are worth extra credit 1 point if you find them online and 5 points if you make significant edits to them see example in latest post for more details...

Note: This topic is just for posting ideas to the required items list bellow that all Toontaskers from both parks will be required to add to there new Toontown. I may edit it before I post the official challenge later but let’s get a list going. I would love to see this list finished by the end of next week so you have until April 3rd to make this list.

This list and Nick's list bellow may help you come up with some ideas:

What kind of rides would i want to see in Toontown?

What kind of rides do kids enjoy?

Can we improve the way people greet charachters?

Should we add a sit down restaurant?

Do we only do snacks or nothing at all?

What charachters do we want to see, homes included, in toontown?

What are somethigns we can get away with when totally redoing a land we cant with a normal refurbishment?

What are some things that only toons would find normal?

How can we emerse our guests further?

:duck: :goofy: :pluto: :mmpats: :figgy:

QUOTE
1. Know your audience - Don't bore people, talk down to them or lose them by assuming that they know what you know.

2. Wear your guest's shoes - Insist that designers, staff and your board members experience your facility as visitors as often as possible.

3. Organize the flow of people and ideas - Use good story telling techniques, tell good stories not lectures, lay out your exhibit with a clear logic.

4. Create a weenie - Lead visitors from one area to another by creating visual magnets and giving visitors rewards for making the journey

5. Communicate with visual literacy - Make good use of all the non-verbal ways of communication - color, shape, form, texture.

6. Avoid overload - Resist the temptation to tell too much, to have too many objects, don't force people to swallow more than they can digest, try to stimulate and provide guidance to those who want more.

7. Tell one story at a time - If you have a lot of information divide it into distinct, logical, organized stories, people can absorb and retain information more clearly if the path to the next concept is clear and logical.

8. Avoid contradiction - Clear institutional identity helps give you the competitive edge. Public needs to know who you are and what differentiates you from other institutions they may have seen.

9. For every ounce of treatment , provide a ton of fun - How do you woo people from all other temptations? Give people plenty of opportunity to enjoy themselves by emphasizing ways that let people participate in the experience and by making your environment rich and appealing to all senses.

10. Keep it up - Never underestimate the importance of cleanliness and routine maintenance, people expect to get a good show every time, people will comment more on broken and dirty stuff.

Thats soo cool nick definitly words to live by when doing anything creative!

Ok so check the post at the top for an updated version of the challenge we face.

Ok I'm on for the MK toontaskers!

SKKaty - March 23, 2009 10:50 PM (GMT)
I'd have to be on WDW if there is room.

nicks_ahoy - March 24, 2009 12:50 AM (GMT)
I'm up for this. I definitely think that Toontown has been in desperate need of a weenie, however I don't know what it could be. Perhaps a water tower similar to the one in DHS minus the ears?
Oh and I'm definitely a Magic Kingdom ToonTasker

Jessiestudio - March 24, 2009 01:51 AM (GMT)
Awesome! Im so glad to see so many of you guys are up for a change up to WDW's if we dont get enough DLR's i might just make two WDW teams or i might even have three teams who knows :)

So far we've got three people for MK Toontaskers :) and One new idea :)

Coolimagineer - March 24, 2009 01:58 AM (GMT)
Should we have 2 seperate threads 4 each team? Or should I just post my ideas here?

Jessiestudio - March 24, 2009 02:11 AM (GMT)
Well right now we are just coming up with basic things you guys think should be in the new Toontowns, stuff that should be kind of similar in both like the Mickey and Minnie houses, then you, as a team, can take these ideas and spin them which ever way you want. I would love to have a thread for each team i just dont think we have enough people to form teams yet tho.

If you want to post a specific idea feel free but since teams havent been formed yet the other team(s) may choose to use your idea as well...

Oh and i thought i would also explain the points system right now. Each part of the project will be assigned a point value, like a grading rubric, so maybe the weenie is worth 20 points while the AA's are worth 10 each. Now there are a few ways to gain extra or loose extra points. Missing duedates, being mean to teammates, etc. will loose you points. While making visual aids, or doing maybe an additional mini-project that i add to supplement the project. Although there is a cap on how many points you can earn for visual aids.

Here are examples of two kinds of visual aids:

Obviously these aren't Disney Press Release Quality but they look great on a project. Oh and videos can be added as well. And self made videos are worth more then normal videos.

Thanks for posting the rules. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. As for a dark ride I think something based on Disney's House of Mouse would be very good for this area of the park and perhaps a Meet-and-Greet with random characters at the exit.

Coolimagineer - March 24, 2009 02:39 AM (GMT)
First off, IMO, scrap toontown fair, the idea was cute but is limited and difficult to add onto.

Here is what I'm thinking, there really is no dining at all at Toontown which is quite disapointing. I would say a House of Mouse dining location should definetly be added. I'd say rather than there being characters walking around, it should play playlists of various disney cartoons and shorts, and it should be seasonal. For example, for Christmas time, it should play disney's version of a Christmas Carol and other festive videos.

I can also see what I can come up with for scenery, I'm sure I could come up with some ideas for AA topiaries.

Jessiestudio - March 24, 2009 09:57 PM (GMT)
I really like the idea of the table service diner Jennings as well as that dark ride Ahoy. From what i am seeing house of mouse plays a strong role in the concepts so far. So will the toontown be more of a downtown theme?

Oh and personally i have never seen the fair concept in real life, i have never been to WDW, but i feel that the roger rabbit toontown setting did offer a lot more to work with then WDW's concept did.

Here are some quck tour videos of Toontown for those who haven't been to DLR. I see both toontown's being more like this yet both 100x better then what it is now. Some ideas here i like some i strongly dislike. But just make sure its fun and toonarific!

Ok right now we have 3 people signed up which is about enough to make oh, one good sized team. Make sure to invite your friends, yes even your non masterminds ones come come join up here, this will be a fanastic project if we can get six or more people to join.

nicks_ahoy - March 24, 2009 11:06 PM (GMT)
Wow DLR's Toontown is much better than WDW's. There seem to be less and less Character meals in Disney so I think the House of Mouse would be a good one. I definitely think a downtown Toontown would be better than a suburb-style

Coolimagineer - March 24, 2009 11:19 PM (GMT)
I would agree, more of a city type of theme less than country.

That being said, I definetly think it would be awesome to design some billboards for the city. For example, off the top of my head I'm thinking McDuck banks, structures like that.

Additionaly, I think for a dark ride it would be very cool to have an add-on to House of Mouse. I do remember they had one episode where they journyed into the basement to find someone who had gotten lost. And the basement was a giant utopia of hidden treasures and dangerous obstacles. I could totally see this being recreated into a ride.

Jessiestudio - March 24, 2009 11:28 PM (GMT)
That sounds pretty interesting. But keep in mind that you will need charachter homesteads <sp? as so DLR has a suburban feel on one half while a city feel on the other so they can see both sides of the world where toons live. :cheer1: :cheer1: :cheer1:

oh and people who want to join in on the fun please post which team you would like to be on so i can get an idea of how big the teams will be :) thanks

Coolimagineer - March 25, 2009 08:26 PM (GMT)
What do you guys think about homes in Downtown Toontown? I'm thinking either like crooked, zany townhouses, or just like cartoony condos. Any ideas?

nicks_ahoy - March 25, 2009 09:47 PM (GMT)
Condos would be my choice. However, I've noticed that you didn't use the new cover on your TPS report. So, next time just make sure you do use the new cover. 'kay? Yeeaaa. Thaaannnkkss. :java:

Huh? Were you talking to me? What is a TPS report?

nicks_ahoy - March 25, 2009 10:16 PM (GMT)
Lol its from the movie Office Space. When i saw the smiley i felt it necessary to include it. But other than that I just think that the condos would be a good idea.

Coolimagineer - March 25, 2009 10:59 PM (GMT)
Oh if that's the case than "That's...that's my stapler..."

"Thanks, Milton!"

These boards ROCK lately because of Scores!!! I think I need to send another installment of rainbow cookies...

I was thinking about participating, but I have been super busy being a Mom lately, and that has not left me much time to spend on the computer. I've been managing to find enough time in the day to check all my forums, facebook, myspace, and get my loyalty missions done in Smallworlds.

I will toss in ideas as they come to me - but I don't think it would be fair to commit myself to the entire process when it is doubtful I can put alot of energy into it.

I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!!!

Jessiestudio - April 7, 2009 04:58 PM (GMT)
Ok guys well unfortunatley we only have enough to make one team right now which is kind of sad so unless we can get at least three more people by the end of the week it will have to be a general brain storming round instead of a competition round. If anyone else would like to join dont hesitate just sign right up :)

Jessiestudio - April 15, 2009 12:15 AM (GMT)
Ok i was thinking of reworking the competition into a series of rounds where imagineers, you guys, compete individualy to develop concepts for a set challenge and then are graded and which ever one scores higher is placed into the land until an entire land has been created and then we would move on.
