To all who come to this happy place, Welcome.
Disneyland is your land,
Here age relives fond memories of the past,
and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future.
Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America,
With the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.

I think I remember reading that the opening was a total mess!!! It was like over 100 degress, people were sinking in the asphalt on Main Street and most of the Park was not finished. Also it was super crowed with I think mostly press people and Super Stars like Frank Santra :omg: but let me say this, if I had a time machine I would go back to that day in a heart beat. How those people must have felt :woot: To be apart of History like that. I give it   .

Actually, I remember reading somewhere that the reason that the park was so crowded on what was supposed to be a press-only grand opening is because somebody got ahold of what the press passes looked like, and then counterfeited them! Yes, as crazy as it was, I too would have liked to have been there.

Yup, disaster it was.

It's referred to as "Black Sunday" in Disney lore. It was one of the hottest days of the year, some of the asphalt and paint hadn't dried all the way, and attractions were breaking down left and right. The televised program got quite messed up, too. Lines were forgotten, false cues were given, and microphones were lost. I have a DVD with the opening day coverage on it, and it's actually quite hilarious. Once Art Linkletter couldn't find a microphone and one of the other hosts was narrating it as it happened. "Mr. Linkletter is trying to find a microphone...but can't seem to find one...someone is helping him find it..." Also, it was very crowded. 10,000 people were invited, and 28,000 people showed up. It was insane.

Yet the park became a success!

And this has been your Disney History lesson with MadAboutMickey for today.
